Today we’re going to talk about a few network marketing tips so that we can break down the steps to success in a way that (I hope) is understandable and achievable.
Network marketing is often misrepresented. It tends to be framed as though you will be able to become rich quickly and easily.
But the truth is, it’s not easy…
But it’s not that complicated either.
The path to success in network marketing can be broken down into several steps that anybody can take. There are so many normal, everyday folks who have created extraordinary success in network marketing.
You do not need to be extraordinary.
And you do not need to be privileged.
There are no gatekeepers or external barriers that can keep you down in network marketing.
The only real barrier is YOU.
If you have the commitment to succeed and simply decide that you’re not going to quit until you have what you want, then you can do it.
As Darren Hardy has said:
Commitment is doing the thing you said you would do long after the mood you said it in has passed.
If you make the decision to stick with it no matter what, then you’ll have the mental wherewithal to become resourceful enough and not get distracted by anything.
So let’s cover 7 network marketing tips that basically cover what it takes to make it in this business.
If you don’t know what network marketing is or why it’s useful in today’s economy, you might think about reading our MLM deep-dive analysis.
1. Get Your Finances In Order
Many people who first get involved in network marketing are doing so because they need to make more money… fast.
You might be wondering how you’re going to continue to put food on the table for your kids. Or pay for an upcoming medical bill. Or an expensive car repair.
Listen, if you are in an acute personal financial crisis and you need to make money right now, then network marketing is not a good option for you. At least not yet.
While it takes only a tiny investment to get started in network marketing, it does still require some money.
Some companies may require you to pay a monthly business fee or buy a certain number of products per month in order to be qualified to earn commissions.
This is perfectly fine…
But if you’re in a personal financial crisis, then you need to make money NOW.
And the best way to do that is to get a temporary second job.
Don’t let any overzealous MLM distributors convince you that you’ll make thousands of dollars immediately and all of your financial woes will be solved overnight…
Because that will likely not be the case.
Understand your own situation.
If you barely have enough money to cover your monthly expenses and you’re truly living paycheck to paycheck, you may not have the money to even stay qualified for your MLM compensation plan.
You’ll be tempted to overextend yourself with the hopes that you’ll earn everything back in the first few weeks.
But think about the stressful position you’re putting yourself into.
You’re already living paycheck to paycheck, and now you add on a monthly business expense of $100 to $300. You don’t have the cash to do it, so you use your credit card.
Cuz you’ll make it all back quickly, right?
But now your finances are even more stretched than they were before and the debt load is growing every month. You’re more stressed out than ever; all you can think about is how desperately you need to make money fast.
Do you really think you’ll be effective at convincing people to buy your products or join your business?
The answer is hell no.
Your potential customers or business candidates will sense that you’re operating from a place of desperation and it will be nearly impossible for you to make a credible case for your business opportunity.
If you want to be effective in network marketing, you have to come from a place of confidence. You need to have posture. You need to share your products and business with the intention of providing value to the marketplace, rather than solving an acute personal financial crisis.
So before diving into a network marketing business, get your personal finances in order.
This is likely the most underrated of network marketing tips…But you need to figure out a budget that you can comfortably sustain.
Any monthly business expense should be in your budget. And whether or not you make any money in your business, you should be able to cover those expenses with ease.
Keep your day job and be the best employee that you can be. If you have to temporarily take on a second job to dig your way out of debt and establish a sustainable budget, do it.
And when you’re ready to pay for any monthly MLM business expenses without it causing you undue financial strain, you’ll be able to build your business from a place of personal power.
You’ll be able to talk about your business with a calm confidence and you won’t be devastated when any single individual is not interested in what you’re selling.
This is what’s going to allow you to stick with it until you have the success of your dreams.
Listen, people really do get rich in network marketing.
But you have to lay the foundation so that you’re able to take the necessary actions for as long as it takes.
Consider reading Dave Ramsey’s book The Total Money Makeover. He’ll teach you how to take control of your finances, no matter how dire you think your current situation is.
2. Understand The Business
Before diving headfirst into network marketing, it’s a good idea to get a thorough understanding of how the business works.
It’s likely that the distributor who introduces you to this business model may try to sell you a false bill of goods. It’s unfortunate, but network marketing is widely misrepresented. Many people make unrealistic income claims and may try to convince you that you’ll get rich quickly and easily.
So if you want to reap the financial benefits that network marketing really can offer, you need to have realistic expectations.
Understand that most people you talk to about your business opportunity will not be interested. And of the people that do jump in and give it a try, the majority of them will drop out before ever making a significant amount of money.
If you understand this before getting started, you won’t be caught off guard. You’ll be expecting it. You’ll know that it’s normal. Everyone experiences it and you need to push forward despite perceived setbacks.
You need to understand how money is made in network marketing.
Recruiting and building your sales network is an important part of long term success… but it’s not everything. Ultimately, revenue is derived from product sales.
Learn how money is really made in network marketing so that you know exactly what you’re getting into.
3. Plug In And Follow The System
When you first get started in network marketing, you’ll be taught a system. A system that many people have used before you to build a successful MLM business.
It won’t necessarily be easy, but it will be simple.
You may be tempted to go online and seek out network marketing tips. Heck, that’s probably why you’re reading this article!
But before you try to reinvent the wheel, you should simply plug into your team and do what your business leader is teaching you to do.
The system you will be taught has been specifically designed to strike a balance between effectiveness and simplicity.
Remember, the incentives in network marketing are perfectly aligned. If you make more money, so does your upline.
So you can rest assured that you will not be misled.
4. Don’t Dilly Dally
Many of us struggle with perfectionism.
You’ll feel as though you need to fully know and understand everything about the business and related processes before taking any real action.
Don’t fall for this!
When you first get involved with network marketing, it’s crucial for you to get some quick wins. You need to prove to yourself that the business works before you get exhausted and lose motivation.
You will initially be very excited about your new opportunity.
Take full advantage of that initial excitement. Because that excitement will wear off, especially if you spend that time doing things that don’t directly contribute to your receiving commission checks.
There is a line that exists in network marketing:
On one side of the line, it’s easier to quit than to continue. On the other side of the line, it’s easier to continue than to quit.
You need to get on the right side of that line as quickly as possible.
Build that initial momentum so that you’ll feel compelled to keep going even when things get tough.
Take action before you feel ready to do so.
5. Recruit AND Sell Products
Many folks who are attempting to build an MLM business put too much focus on recruiting.
You’ll hear all these inspiring stories about people building huge teams in network marketing. And it may cause you to think that team building has to be your main focus…
But that’s not necessarily true.
Remember that a network marketing company, just like any other business, derives its income from selling products. Period. Full stop.
The whole purpose of building a team of distributors is to have a large network of people selling products for you.
But you’re a part of that sales network.
If you’re not focusing on selling products in addition to recruiting, why would you expect your team to do so?
In order to make a long term residual income that you can rely on for years to come, you will need to strike a balance between moving products and building your team.
Neither is more important than the other.
Both are necessary.
If you do a search online for network marketing tips, you’ll find that the vast majority of videos and articles you consume focus almost completely on recruiting.
But that misses the point of how money is actually made in network marketing.
You’re building a network of people that will produce sales volume in addition to perpetually growing itself.
6. Focus On Duplication
Duplication in network marketing is the real secret sauce to making it in this business. Without duplication, your team will never grow on its own.
When you bring someone new into your business, that person will be watching you very closely. You will be perceived as a leader, whether you like it or not.
Your team will be watching what you’re doing in order to build your business. And they will try to duplicate your success.
This is why it’s so important that you build your business in such a way that most people can replicate.
Keep things simple and follow the system that you’ve been taught. Because that system has been specifically designed for duplication.
You may be tempted to go out and take a course on high pressure sales tactics. And the truth is, you may be able to recruit a lot more people using these fancy tactics.
But you have to remember that most people will not be able to duplicate that.
They’ll be watching you. And they’ll likely try to build their own teams the same way that you’re building yours. But the vast majority will inevitably fail. And quit the business.
And you will be forced to constantly replenish your team. You’ll never reap the benefits that network marketing can truly offer… long term passive income.
So if you fail to create duplication in your team, you’ve essentially got yourself a low paying sales job.
And that’s what you got into network marketing for.
As Randy Gage has said:
It doesn’t matter what works. A lot of things work. What matters is what duplicates.
7. Commit To Never Quit
No matter what you’ve been told, network marketing is not really easy.
It’s simple, yes.
But don’t confuse simple for easy.
You’re going to have setbacks. You’ll have difficult periods. And you’ll make plenty of mistakes along the way.
But you need to understand that everyone makes mistakes. Especially the top earners.
The top earners created success by being willing to make more mistakes than anyone else. That’s the main difference between you and the network marketing professionals who made it big… they made more mistakes than you.
But they continued moving forward, taking imperfect action along the way, and learning from each mistake they made.
That’s the mindset you need to have.
Be willing to make more mistakes than anyone else. Mistakes are how you learn and become better. Your business needs to be a corrective mechanism.
You learn what not to do as you move along.
Remember, a mistake or setback does not constitute failure.
The only real way to fail is to quit.
If you commit to taking imperfect action until you have the results you want, then your success becomes inevitable.
To Wrap Up…
Network marketing is not perfect. Nothing is.
But network marketing is worth it if you’re willing to put in the work, follow a simple system, and commit to doing so until you succeed.
Your friends and family probably won’t understand what you’re doing. They may be completely uninterested. Some may even ridicule you. You may need to grow a thick skin and get used to folks denigrating this business model that you’re so excited about.
But if you can stick with it and develop a rock solid confidence in what you’re building, you’ll be amazed at where your life could be in a few short years from now.
Look, do other people’s opinions really matter that much?
I would argue that they don’t.
What matters is what you’re doing to move your life forward and provide for your loved ones.
Just don’t allow your business (or anything else) to jeopardize your relationships.
We’re all free to make our own decisions and you don’t need approval from anybody.
I firmly believe that if you follow the 7 network marketing tips we talked about today, you’ll be able to build a network marketing team that will blow your mind.
